So I saw something on this sub reddit here about layering, which can be a super good PART of the drum "process". There are other things you can do to get more intense sounding drums though. A technique I use looks like this:
Kicksample.wav>automated_lowpass_filter>Multiband_Compressor>a_wee_bit_of_saturation/excitement/overdrive>Drum_Bus_Compressor
The automated lowpass filter has a steep envelope and lots of resonance. The multi band compressor is weighted to favor the top end. The last bit before the bus compressor should be used sparingly if at all.
