I would say that by now, I am fairly competent at sound design, harmonies/ melodies etc., and am capable of getting the vast majority of my ideas into music in a relatively short time. I have not really learned much about mixing or mastering however (other than the absolute basics of eqing, compression and limiting).
I find this shows especially when I try converting my wav files into 320kbps mp3. They completely go to shit, and I mean completely. The bass gets really quiet with no character, the drums go all muddy, the highs get distorted and everything else sort of merges into each other. You can't even hear some instruments at all. You don't hear this kind of effect on any pro tracks, even as low as 192kbps.
This isn't a problem whatsoever when dealing with wav files or even FLAC files at half the bitrate. I don't really understand what's going on and would like to try and fix it.
