I've recently started getting back into production, have always dipped in and out of it because as Ira Glass has said, there's that plateau period where one thinks everything they produce doesn't seem to be up to snuff. But that's it right there, those thoughts.
The moment one starts thinking about the quality of their sound (save mixing/mastering) in the midst of a production, it's over.
It's so very easy for a new artist to open another window outside of their DAW, listen to a professionally finished track, and then rage quit their session. I'm incredibly prone to this as well. For anyone like me that has many times before quit production for months to years, maybe try this.
I've recently stopped thinking, entirely. During a session, I just feel. Now, that sounds hippy as fuck I understand but what I produce is called dance music. The idea is to make people dance. So I just loop an 8-bar, and have fun with it. As long as I'm bobbing, then that's it. That's gold.
