I've worked in every facet of the music industry, from running a live production company (clubs, collegiate shows, festival stages) to running an international record label. I've seen some crazy shit.
You think the EDM industry is a meritocracy? Trust me, it's not. It's a game, and you have to learn the rules to win. To get you started, here are a few funny/weird/notable experiences I've had.
-
I once booked and ran a private show starring The Chainsmokers... for $700
-
I had Rae Sremmurd and iLoveMakonnen show up to one of my concerts, and I didn't recognize them (almost turned into a very awkward situation)
-
A guy I worked with got dropped off a two-story building for scamming a music festival out of tens of thousands of dollars
-
I've thrown unlicensed shows that cost upward of $50,000 (and were 100% cash-based)
-
I (legally) took advantage of SoundCloud's archaic website to create an email list (including user locations) valued at roughly $100,000 -- in three days
-
For several weeks, my audio engineer buddy would sneak me into the studio that Carlos Santana and Slayer were recording at (after they left for the night), where we would mark every setting on the patch bays, outboard gear, mixing console, etc... then unplug everything so I could work on projects all night. We'd replace everything at around 6AM and I'd leave before everyone came in for the morning.
That's just off the top of my head, I'm sure there's so much more I'll think of with some questions. Fire away!
