I've been producing now since last June, but have put in quite a lot of hours, and even though I can see I'm making progress with my songs, I can't work out why my drops don't have the impact of other songs, especially bass wise... On my current song I have 3 bass synths, a kick and a sub bass all hitting different frequencies in their right places between 30hz and 250hz, all boosted to levels where theres just about no distortion and theres still significantly less bass than tracks i listen to... If i boost the bass any more it will squash the rest of the song beneath it and be way too powerful and there doesn't seem to be a midpoint.
To be honest I don't think i understand bass at all, I don't know if there is some kind of guidelines I should be following about bass. I watched a tutorial where he showed his bass but the bass was the only synth in the track he used, what about all the frequencies between 250 and 10k hertz? or did his bass synth cover those too... My main questions are
-
Does a bass work as a lead?
-
Could it be the synths im using don't cover enough of the bass(80-250hz) range?
-
Do i have to boost bass in post-production to get that bassy feeling?
-
Can you have a bass playing a different melody to your synths(which would be higher freq)?
-I usually hear the bass playing the same melody but when I try that it sounds stupid and sometimes goes too high and is no longer bass...
I'm quite confused... any help would be great, even links to tutorials would be amazing, if you want reference for my tracks you can see some here https://soundcloud.com/synchrone/tracks
