Not sure how much this will help you guys, but I struggle a lot with making a cool loop and just endlessly jamming it to the point where I can't stand it anymore. This always ends up in unfinished work. Recently I've been trying to enforce a mental rule where I'm only going to play it back if I'm going to actively think of things to add or subtract from it. This has lead me to a helpful habit where I go up to the top bar (in the area above the track, where the mouse pointer turns into a speaker) right click, and use the "add locator" option. As I listen through, I will think of where a transition needs to come in, a fill, or another element like a synth or bass. I will add a locator at the point where I imagine the element coming in, and label it accordingly.
I know this is a known feature and seems like a simple, everyday concept but this has helped me TREMENDOUSLY with moving along through a song. It gives me immediate direction to what plugins I need to be opening next and it keeps the idea alive. Hope this can help someone else as much as it did me!
