The main thing I notice in professional tracks that is always lacking in mine is that there are random background noises and sweeps and stuff like that which when I am writing a track it never really occurs to me to add. Sometimes I go back after and try to add them in but they always sound kind of stupid and out of place.
First of all, how do you know what sounds you want? Is it something that just comes to you in the same way that you might imagine a melody or drum fill will fit in a certain place? And do you design these sounds yourselves or use samples? Do you usually know exactly what you want and find it or do you just try random sounds to fill it out and go with whatever works best?
I'm not talking like noise sweeps for build ups or anything like that, and ambience in softer sections is always fairly intuitive to me, its more like in high energy track during the drop or whatever there will be these sounds that seem completely random but somehow help glue the whole thing together.
