I read so many recommendations about ensuring that bass content of songs should be mono as a production standard. I've mostly been following this because it's an easy way to clean up your bass area.
However, upon further analysis of the songs that I like I find that this is technique is not relevant to them. Without exception, I find significant bass content in the side part of the mix. That goes for not only the 100-200hz region, but also down to the 50hz region (and below). I am finding that in general my favourite songs have the bass running at around 50% level in the stereo image compared to the mono.
The lesson I have learnt is: by all means keep your bass tight and on key to reduce the mud and ensure it is majority mono, but do not fool yourself that hi passing the bass out of your stereo image completely is a good idea in any way. If in doubt, throw one of your favourite bassy songs in to you DAW and solo the sides or left/right and see what's actually happening in the bass image. Some beautiful things can happen in side bass.
