Hello.
I’m a professional full-time musician. I’ve been playing the guitar and various other instruments for 18 years. Just very recently, because I’ve been trying to further polish the sound of my wedding band, I have started to incorporate electronics into what we do. Mainly, sampling drum and percussion sounds from records and loading them into drum pads for the drummer to play live, as well as sampling other bells and whistles that we can trigger with pedals or on the keyboard.
Now, I am barely starting to be able to identify and tinker the classic drum sounds like the 808, 909, the Linn, etc. but it’s a new world and there’s just so much I don’t know. Here are my questions:
1.- Let's say there's a very nice deep, textured drum sound on a record, and I want my drummer to be able to have it. What I have been doing is–aside from sampling from stems–putting the song on Logic Pro X, chopping the sounds I need, exporting the region as audio file, and then loading it into the pads. Are resolution and fidelity a big factor into why some of these sounds are so deep and textured? If so, is the process I described above an adequate way of doing this and sounding good through our PA, or are there better methods you could describe or recommend?
2.- Another way I do it, with my Fantom G7's sampler, is play the song or track out of the output of my computer into the input of the Fantom through an aux cable, and then chop on the keyboard. Does his sound right to you?
3.- There are drum sounds that intrigue me a lot, and other than getting a clean sample of it, I have no idea where to begin finding or getting something like that. I'm going to five you two specific examples, so that you can listen to them and guide me towards finding that:
A) Is the bass drum and not I Feel It Coming by The Weeknd. Holy shit is that a beautiful sounding kick. I can't find stems of the song, and there isn't a section of the song where I can get a clear hit for me to sample. What do I need to do, or where do I need to look to get THAT for my band?
B) On Daft Punk's Get Lucky, well into the song there is a break where Omar Hakim's acoustic - and gorgeous - drum track stops, and the song switches to an entirely electro feel. The robot voices come on, and and electro drum pattern comes on. I love that electro drum sound. It sounds punchy, and almost distorted. Is that a specific electronic drum sound they used, or did they engineer that themselves? How do I get that sound?
Thank you very much for your time. This is an awesome forum. I structured my questions as well as I could so that you can address specific points.
Again, thank you for your guidance.
