I've started making music, but I don't own reference speakers, or reference headphones for that matter. Is it pointless to try make music without these?

I have some OK headphones, just semi-expensive gaming ones.

I can't get reference speakers as I'm in a tiny room in a share house. I could possibly look into getting some reference headphones, but is there a big disadvantage to this?
