Hey y'all. I understand that compression is used to reduce the dynamic range of a piece of audio. More often than not, however, I read that the attack should be set to a slower setting for "gluing" and such.
So lets say I have a very transient-y drum track and I wanna tame the transients a bit so I can make my drums louder. I use a fast attack to reduce the dynamic range, but my sound is now really dull and lifeless. With a slow attack, I end up with the same peaks and if I turn up my channel, I'm peaking. So, what am I supposed to do then?
Also, for the life of me, I can't set the release time correctly. Hell, I can't even hear the difference between 50ms and 300 ms of release.
Any advice on how to make my compression "better"?
