Hi all, I started producing a few months ago after getting the Ableton free trial and having some fun making simple mashups, and recently decided I'd like to make my own beats. I quickly discovered that to do this I was going to need a lot more money than I anticipated. I managed to get a cracked Ableton copy (feels bad but no way do I have $800+ to spend) and thought I was good to go. Then i discovered that to make the music I enjoy, Serum ($189) was almost a necessity, at least from the YouTube videos I watched. I made some simple beats with the default drums and sounds/instruments in Ableton and quickly learned how valuable sample packs are, but found most of the free ones a bit lacking, and the ones with the 'sound' im looking to produce (mostly Bass House / G-House) are easily $50+. And finally, even when I manage to make a loop I really like I have so much trouble making the drop sound how I want without a physical keyboard and a simple MIDI will likely run me ~$80.
How do you guys recommend getting started without breaking the bank? I'm worried even if I buy a sample pack that sounds really good I'll be underwhelmed and find I wasted my money. So far I have downloaded cymatics packs and some other but most seem very slim on sounds.
Also: I'd like to make it clear that I'm not treating any of these purchases as magical one-trick-fixes to make me a great producer or anything. I've made several songs and beats i really like using the Ableton defaults but these are all issues I've run into during my sessions that while I'm able to overcome (like point and click trial by error on MIDI melodies, modifying drum sounds myself, using fixed instruments vs synths, etc) do seem much more fixable if I had the money to spend.
