Not sure exactly what my problem is called so forgive me if the title doesn't describe much, but I'll try to describe my issue concisely:
Whenever I need to make a "dirty," low sound like a dubstep growl my sound design is all over the fucking place in a great way. I know what I'm looking for and I am getting real good at accidentally creating new very unique sounds. I can write for these sounds fairly well in a very free-form way and could generate tracks that fit this profile all day.
Now here comes the fucking problem. I'm having hella fucking trouble designing high sounds that aren't annoying and can play a "lead" role in the sound. The most I can do are trap songs where the drop consists of basically high "boops" with lots of reverb, all kinds of bubbly sounds (unfortunately most of my favorite ways of those are more low-mid though), and spins on supersaws that I can get pretty creative with. Most of the time (minus supersaws which are basically like working with wobbles/dirty basses with chords) I can't even successfully write high lead sections for any genres.
I can create unique catchy melodies and stuff in my head while listening to music I love but rarely end up getting those ideas into my music after the song I'm listening to stops, so most of the time I'm bouncing ideas back and forth between elements of the song until I get a jumping off point, start making a skeleton arrangement and go from there. For some reason I can NEVER end up getting good high synth leads like this. They either sound lame and slow/super out of character, I can't write for them/use them, or they turn into really weird new dirty basses when I lose focus or get annoyed.
Tl;dr Can anyone help me with general sound design and writing concepts for mid->high lead (generally more melodic) sounds? If I can get a drop or a base/groove of a song going I should be good from there. I learn more from philosophical concepts I can analgously apply to my own thoughts/ideas/concepts if that helps or makes sense.
