I've always been a big fan of the Frank Zappa song "Sy Borg" from 1979. It's funny, disgusting and is an example of superb musicianship. Not EDM of course, but it does have a sublime synth solo played by Peter Wolf and I've always wondered how he got that sound. You can hear a little snippet of it in the intro, but jump to around 4:50 to hear the solo itself. It's not so much the raw synth sound - although I'd love to know what synth he's using because it's awesome - it's more the effect used. I'm pretty sure Zappa used to use Ibanez flangers pretty freely in the studio so maybe he's using one of those with a large depth dialed in....but in parts of the solo he gets this amazingly deep growl and I just can't work out exactly what it is. I'm not the best at deconstructing sounds so wondered if anyone who is might take a quick listen and tell me "why of course, it's......."
Warning, definitely NSFW, if you are offended by explicit content then just don't listen.
