just some quick background about me: i’m a multi instrumentalist but my main instrument is guitar. been playing music for probably a year and a half now and i’m always looking to try and improve. also became quite the dead head recently, it’s been fucking rad. anyway, i was having a conversation with a musician friend of mine while we were listening to the grateful dead and he says something to the effect of “they’re great because you can tell they’re students of music and they studied. so when they play they know they can go over here next or over here and then over here”. then i asked him how i could get to that point of knowledge of the fretboard in relation to the chords they’re playing and stuff. and he tells me something about “study chord structure and the fretboard” and stuff like that.
now my question is: how? like i know what he’s saying, but where do i even begin? i’ve added the major/mixolydian scales to my arsenal since i know jerry fucks around with those. but what more can i do to gain that knowledge that the grateful dead possess?
thanks so much in advance!
