I am smart enough to know to ask this very important question, but self-internet-taught enough to hardly know how to word the question, so bear with me:
I see a lot of songs that seem to jump back and forth between keys... like Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys.... it looks like I-V-IV-V in F, then suddenly I-V-IV-V in G, then back to in F, etc etc.
I have also been told that Brian Wilson was talented enough to make that all in the same key, to where it's just an illusion of key change with a bunch of harmonic overlaps.
So my question is.... from the standpoint of a guy who just wants to write some pretty tunes.... is it good enough for me to think of my song as being able to change keys back and forth every few measures, or is that going to result in garbage?
Also, would it matter what I am modulating to?
One of my favorite tunes ever starts in C major, then has a bridgey section that sounds like D major. I don't know if it's all in C using secondary dominants (II), or if just thinking of it as D major gets the job done perfectly well.
But could I do the same thing between B and C, or will the half step difference make it sound completely off? (Since there's little to no overlap between the two keys)
Thanks for the help!!!
