Your genre.
Sorry for the clickbait but it's true
There is no next big genre and there is one simple reason for it. The ones who are predicting the rise and fall of different genres like it's the damn Stock Market are the ones who are followers they don't want to be a leader, but a follower.
If you are doing Future Bass just because it's what people like nowadays then stop, I can't force you to stop but you should. Never in life has "fake it till you make it" lead to success, those who aim to create are the ones who are becoming big. For example, let's look at Kygo who is credited with making Tropical House famous with hits like Firestone or Carry me. He made a tropical house in the era where everyone was doing Big Room / Progressive House but did he steer his ship into that direction? No. He continued making his style of music, his way of imagining what songs should be and not what some random dude thinks on the internet.
He then got famous because his now manager Miles discovered him and saw what no one else saw in this kid, a chance for him to be the next big thing because his music was good. Kygo is now one of the biggest talents in EDM and becoming an even bigger one in the larger music industry.
The example of Kygo is an example for all of us. An example to not be someone who makes music because it's famous at this moment but because it's what he/she loves, make what YOU like not what we like, not what your friends like but what YOU like.
Is it wrong to do a genre that is popular? Of course not. In fact, I would suggest you do what is big right now. It gives you a taste of what EDM is like now. I did Future Bass too, I like some Future Bass songs and artists; I am not gonna say to be stuck in 2005 making the same progressive and electro house songs. I take a lot of elements from VARIOUS genres of music and combine them to my style. My style of Progressive House that was like 2012 esque has now changed into something that is a combination of Melodic Drop with Trap style breakdowns with the energy of a big room song and the melody of a Future Bounce song. See how many genres became what I make today? That is called "cheating" like artists.
If you simply just do an Illenium style song that you won't ever get big, you know why? Illenium is labeled with that style, why should people listen to you instead of Illenium who is already famous with that style? It's not about what kind of music you make or do, it's about what YOU BRING TO THE TABLE, let me say that again, it's about WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE. You can make G-House and some twat can be saying you won't ever get big, but guess what, you can get big making G-House. I'll tell you Tchami did what he likes, look where Tchami is now. I can tell you Flume did what he loved, look where he is now. So stop copying what other's do and do what you do, make people look at music the way you look at it. Make people love your minimal drops.
In conclusion, Stop being someone who copys other people and expects to get famous. You can get famous with anything as long as it's good, historically any big genre started with one person who broke the rules of music at that time. Do you want to be a follower or a rule breaker? You're choice.
