I have watched live sets on YouTube for years now but pretty casually. Recently I decided to commit more time to making music, learning about the tools, and analyzing performances. One of the artists I've spent the most time analyzing is deadmau5.
I see a coupe of things I think are weaknesses of his, but he also seems much busier and seems to have more players and mixers than most mainstage DJs based on his side-to-side travel area (haha, I know he's shorter).
I have two questions for anyone who's worked with or near him, which sort of go together. My impression is most DJs have 1) alternate versions of their songs, 2) transition beats, and 3) a defined set list for benefit of success and the lighting guys. It seems, however, that deadmau5 improvises more...
Is my impression about most musicians correct? Or is there way more improvisation going on that it looks like? And is deadmau5 doing more transition improvisation than most with more gear, or does he just keep moving to make it seem that way?
tl;dr WTF is going on onstage (lol)?
