So I feel like I have a lot of random knowledge for theory picked up from YouTube videos and reading. I understand what chords are and how to build basic melodies within a key. But I'm struggling to apply what I know to my own music.
I feel like everytime I sit to try and write, it's always the same kinda sound with your basic major chords and I give up trying to force it. Part of it is due to using tip sheets or googling stuff to be able to get going, and in that process, I end up getting bored or tired of not being able to put what's in my head in the daw.
Does anyone have tips on what I could to break out of this? Is there some sort of structures guide to applying music theory. Or how I can take basic major or minor scale chords and make them sound a little more interesting. I don't want to keep going down th knowledge rabbit hole and not actually create anything.
As a side note, I'm considering taking some piano lessons to learn how to improvise hoping that being able to play stuff out might help my problem.
Thanks in advance.
