this past christmas, my amazing girlfriend got me the gift of deadmau5's masterclass. they recently ran an original track competition for students--the only rule being that everything in the track be 100% original. while i understand that there is no real way to detect or prevent the use of presets & loops etc, i really wanted to push myself & build a track from the ground up using only sounds i synthesized or field recordings i tracked & processed.
as i was creating the track i quickly realized i was doing a lot of things from scratch that some people might want to see. i've always wanted to put out some short tutorials, so i thought this was a great opportunity to record some of the process and create some insight/instructional videos. this first one is about how to make a kick drum from scratch using FM synthesis.
anyway, a friend of mine suggested i share the video here. i already have some ideas on how to make the next one better (zoom & focus being a main one) but if you guys have any feedback on the video i’d love to hear it! also, there's a bit more info and a download of the kick drum loop i created in the youtube video description...
