I've always had this question regarding the use of a compressor for mixing porpuses: Should I add a compressor to a channel after I've set said channel's fader on the mixdown (and I don't plan on moving it anymore) and then adjust the compressor's options acording to the information I have or I can just use a compressor even if the fader is at 80% on the mixr and I am planning on lowering/raising it later on?
For example, say I have this vocalist record a track and he is all over the place over the volume range of his voice. I route that recording to a channel in the mixer and that channel's volume fader is set at 80% like the rest of the others faders. When the fader is at that position the vocalist' sample peaks at -3db. So lets say I add a compressor and set the threshold at -5db. It corrects the fluctuation and the vocals sound more even, however, I find that vocal too loud, so I decide to lower the fader from 80% to a 50%. Now the vocals' are peaking at -10db. Now that I've made that change in the fader, should I also adjust the compressor's settings to match the new set of peaking and volume information I am getting from this track? Or is the movement of the fader irrelevant to what the compressor is getting (the compressor detects -3db peaks even if I change the fader down).
I've always been quite bothered by this situation, I think it might be obvious to someone else but I just can't wrap my head around it.
