learn the art of transcription. (I recommend listening to a section over and over again) PAN to focus on one instrument. Pitch up/down to check if it sounds like what it should be pitched up, say +5 note. 88notes, every note matters. everynote you press counts. everynote you don't press counts.
-
learn piano, drum, bass, guitar. (1)sometimes, piano voicing would press notes that are close to the note of bass. That would sound like clashing, yet it works sometime in some songs.
(2) guitar would play certain note in a certain voicing. Now, does the piano play the same exact note? should the piano play something other than what the notes the guitar is playing? What should the piano guy do (as the guitar voicing is more limited but still beautiful in own way). (*most of the time, piano guy would press something very similar to the notes the guitar guy's are pressing. the bottom line is they would be pressing something that implies the same scale. (unless its bar-talk, like bartok. jk, i don't know much about him. i don't really actively listen to his music. im already occupied with my favorite genres of my choice. his music is deep (his imply many things. think of playing two different scales panned right and left. ) but all of the songs i listen to have very little in common with that guy. i respect but will have no interest in him, at least next 3 years.)
(3) sometimes, thru synth programming, your one-note, mono-voice, can have a harmonic sound like a triad or something more complex. The other way to look at this is; piano has 88 keys. Frequency has, lets say, 15hz-20khz. (roughly, 20,000-15=19000) so 19,000 keys. that is 88keys vs 19000.00 keys. it can create some really complex harmonics. Learn how to program these from both analogue, Digital (like FM7)
- Actually, all the synth sounds sound like synth. they sound the same. (Yes, I can tell what's DSI, and Ambika, Virus, Massive) yes enormous warmth/digital transient/multi-timbre difference. blah blah blah) They sound like Synth. they don't sound like a acoustic banjo or a duck quack near your house) If i want a really diverse sound pallet. I would not just stay in synth programming for sound designing. I would go out capture street noise, people chatting in a park with different kinds of mics, in different rooms with different room sounds. To your mom and dad, ($5000) jupiter synth in a "Journey" song is same as ($100) vst synth in a cover song. OF COURSE, YOU CAN TELL. you llisten to different synths all the time, don't you? but your parents can't, and your average car mechanic in Ohio won't. (they don't need to, they like cars more than music. its ok)
5. do covers of KISS, buena Vista Social club, Bach classic chorales, church style oragans, Avenged savenfold, metallica, braziliian nickeback, Eagles, American, European, Cuban, african jazz. Try to do covers of all. I hope you find the differnce. harmonically and rythmically. Count everything. why do montuno is different from other latin songs. why Modern sounds harmonically different from lounge-funk.
-
learn mic-ing. mic-ing drums. how many mics do you need? (I want to capture sounds like that. I wanna eliminate room noise as much as possible. actually, I might wanna keep some of it. it just works in this room, weird)
-
actively mix. download stems of songs of many different genres. it's your chance to see all the channels, right in front of you. you can see their arrangement, solos, what effects, cool fx tricks.

You guys talk about burn-out and stuff. BUT THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN TO YOU if the work seems like a manageable size. For example, you haven't done the dishes for a long time, now its piled up, and you really have no option but to the dishes. You do the dishes because you know you can, and you just do it, its just gonna take a LONG time to do it. Music-production should be like that for you. YOU SHOULDN'T think about HOW you are going to do the dishes. if the inspiration doesn't come from you from listening to other people's music, and from casually jamming with your drum-machine, all time synced, looped-pedal set up, it is because your musical pallet is limited. And, you feel discouraged about that because you are literally stuck with your favorite blues or pentatonic scale. Expand your music pallet, and you won't feel limited.

Don't be a perfectionist (OR be a perfect perfectionist, release one perfect song every 10 year. it's your life. do what you like.) Know yourself. Your scarlet 2i2 is fine. people rather hear good music from that than some music without a musical goal recorded with Apogee or some more really expensive "pre and DAtoAD (or whatever)".
-
dx7's original price back then was $1995. check the current price on ebay. Now, is it WORTH to get the new DSI? (unless your super professional hired by Universal music, or something, and you have to make music sounding exactly like the other song). are you going to drop$2000 for a new DSI OR modal002? We actually heard many different really expensive synths from older songs of 70s, 80s. Can we tell the difference? Maybe 30+% of you can tell what exact synth was used in each songs of 70s, and 80s. but the bottom line is they all kinda sound like 70s and 80s because it used the same chain of paths (lets just say, some 80s pre-> some 80s compressor -> some old all analogue conole). If i go back in time, use Prophet 7 DSI to record "Journey"''s song, a very few of you would know the difference. The point here is do not get hung up on the "Warmth","Bi-trimbrality", "Some really expensive synth"

enjoy the art of sound. you singing happy birthday thru iphone-microphone without chorus, reverb, effect is still very beautiful. it's an art.
- this is life tip. if you open the door for the person behind you many times, and the person behind never say thank you or show any kind of appreciation many times (say more than 4 to 5 times). try gentlying slamming the door on their face. walk away without saying anything. (That kind of mild-burst agression to a not-appreciative person, in my opinion, is very good. but don't do that too often) Don't be nice to everyone. Be nice to someone who appreciate that gesture. Show your dominance. and when you turn like 40+ or 50+, then be nice to everyone (including not nice people) because, i don't know, i don't wanna finish the because part. just because because. (sort of like I lived long enough, i just dont give a care. i will be nice to everyone, just leave me alone. let me go home, and get a dinner)
let me just give you a link of this. it's cheesy but sometimes i like it when im in the right mood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ymzy4oAnD0I (Ever wonder why madeon "You're on" sounds like that? it uses a typical french pop voicing. check out 00s,90s,80s, french music. you will see it.)(btw, DFP's music really dont share similarties with Madeon. they are just french but thats all. bye))
P.S. ah.... summer is gone now.....
Good night children (like Fap dupont)
can someone please make a song out of him saying"good morning children". love that guy.
