I've always heard its a good idea to highpass your side channel in the low mids using a mid side EQ. As to mono the lowend and clean up rumbly mids from the sides that doesn't add much.
So, I'm not sure if this is one of those sort of, pieces of information that just gets parroted around on the internet, but upon examining a handful of tracks, it doesn't seem like a lot of "pros" actually do this.
Mind you I'm looking at tracks from skrillex/zomboy/mustdie!/kill the noise, so it might be different for different styles, BUT...
I've put a few of their tracks in ableton, some of their newest stuff, removed the mid channel from the entire track (tried it with both a midside eq and utility to be sure) and there is CLEARLY information all the way down to the sub region on the sides. It's quiet, but its definitely there both visually and audibly.
As well, I've went ahead and applied a highpass to the sides where I hear a lot of people tell others to do on this forum (tried at 100hz, 200hz and 300hz), and it well, kinda neuters the mix. I dunno, it sounds less big.
Thoughts?
