I have a very on/off relationship with production and I've approached it from a lot of different angles. It usually goes nowhere for a variety of reasons, but looking back on things I've made, I notice that my biggest weakness is my percussion. At best, it's basic, derivative, and inoffensive, and at worst it's out of sync, entirely unfitting, and would probably do more for the music if it weren't there.
I get the very general basics of rhythm and beat, but how do I make a drum section sound like more than the kick-snare-hat that someone only just discovering a drum machine might make? Experimentation gets me nowhere but frustrated, and trying to copy producers I like winds up in various stages of failure. What's the big secret I'm missing?
