I've been dabbling in making house lately, primarily experimenting with destructo-like sounds and dirtybird-like sounds. While there are obviously many differences between these two types of house sounds, I've noticed a huge difference between how the kicks are mixed/processed.
To the best of my knowledge, the kick should be the "loudest" element in the mix (correct me if I'm wrong). I've always been told to make sure the kick is the hardest hitting, loudest element at the drop of a track. But in this new destructo track: https://soundcloud.com/destructohard/winning the kick at the drop doesn't appear to be the loudest part of the mix. The main synth appears to be much louder. I understand that the main part of the sub is coming from the lower bassy patch paired with the higher patch compared to many dirty bird tracks where a lot of the sub comes from the kick itself.
My question is this--using the destructo track as an example. Is that kick actually the loudest thing in the mix, and my ears aren't recognizing that because a lot of the sub is coming from the bass patch, or is destructo mixing his kicks quieter to give the main synth/bass more headroom?
Thanks in advance for any replies, this community is dope af. Love you all.
