I started out with getting the idea for a song, and I want it to exist, so I've set out to teach myself how to produce electronic music.
I've got a sense of the different kinds of instruments I want to use, I've got a basic outline for how I want the song to be structured, but more importantly I've got the flavor of the song stuck in my head. That is to say I know what images, sounds, emotions, etc I want it to conjure in my mind. I'm sorry I can't describe it better.
What I don't have yet, is a melody, harmony, or specific instruments picked out. For example, I count four synths: two competing for the melody (one high, one low), one doing the harmony, and one that does an occasional interjection for emphasis, but I haven't designed them in a VST yet (let alone know with certainty which VST I should use).
My question is: should I work on the notes for the different song parts, or should I work on the sound design for the different instruments first?
I've tried swapping out instruments with different melodies and found they can sound drastically different (for better or worse), and I don't want to make the mistake of committing to a melody and not being able to find the right sound design, or commit to designing the sound and not be able to find the right melody...
