Hi guys! I’ve been producing with Ableton for 3 years, but since 2 years I produce everyday. I started with Live 8 making beats, inspired a lot by all that OVO Sound, A$AP Rocky stuff. But I've always been in love with House music too, especially with deep house. So after some months making crap beats I decided to venture into producing house/deep house stuff, inspired a lot from youtube channels such as selected, subsoul, etc, and currently, after make some tracks within this genre I have a dilema; I wanna make a living in music but I don’t even know how to approach it. It’s like I’m in the right moment to decide what path to follow but don’t know where to go. However I feel in a situation where I can do everything! So let’s talk about the options I’m considering.
-Mainstream logical path(Today’s Producer/Dj). Yeah make something fresh mainstream music and just rave. Get signed by a big label such as Spinnin and live the dream! Sounds really cool, but it seems like you don’t have full control of your art. Yeah, you make energetic and catchy music, and you travel the world making several amounts of money blablablla... but what about your full expression as an artist? Its seems (and actually it is) like you take part of a huge company whose main goal is to make as much money as possible and don’t care enough for the art itself. At least is what I feel. When I dig around a bit about Spinnin is like yo... where did they left the art? Just see they music videos. They are really stupid. Sex, chicks, and sex apologies again...no much more. So boring. So yeah you basically have control of an instrumental, but what about working with vocalist? what about music videos and other extension of you art? You can't control it Its a good path but I’m not a big fan of this. I wanna have as much as possible control of my art.
-Risky and unpredictable path(Producer/Beatmaker/Dj). Thats means come back to my roots, to the beats, make R&B, Trap, Hip Hop inspired stuff and try to find and connect with a one singer, making a project together. This is the most solid option for me to make real albums(no compilations) and not just collabs or featurings with other vocalists. Personally I consider this very important. I’d like our project has a real meaning, and resonated entirely with people. Majid Jordan is a good example of this. I love them.
-Try to create something without precedents. Sampling from anywhere on the Internet and making fresh music. Probably I’d tend to doing some alternative R&B, trap, future bass inspired stuff. I’d try it with labels like Monstercat, Soulection. I’d make remixes and originals with samples from the internet. Guys likes Kasbo, Flume, XXYYXX or Kaytanada are good examples of this. They are real artist btw, I'm not saying Spinnin djs are not real artists, just they are not being the best version of himselfs in my opinion, they’re so limited.
-Beatmaker. Just make beats and work with rappers. I like this one but entry in the industry just making beats sounds crazy nowadays. I have the necessity of innovate and create something new, and I need vocals/samples for that. So yeah, Welcome to the previous option.
-Crazy path.(Artist) Ok I forget about learning rapping and incorporate it to my producing skills, just like Kanye West did. This would be perfect, but I’m not a rapper. I’m not even a english native speaker LOL. I’m from Barcelona haha.
TL;DR Love House music but Hip hop is in my code. I want to make a living in music but I feel like just being a beatmaker no generates enough incomes unless you are joined to a singer or vocalist. What path would you choose in my case? Advices and opinions are welcome. Thanks in advance guys!
