I'm hoping this is the right place - but willingly lead me to another more relevant part of reddit if need be!
So a bit of context....
I've been playing keys for a good 15 years, started with piano and went onto synth maybe 5 years later. I had a great time with this and got myself a Yamaha DJXII - but at the time had no idea about the computer aspect (was pretty young/poor etc.) with just a little messing around on Cubase and Audacity (as a live musician it was my choice tool).
Since then I've had a big break from music, though I've kept writing more acoustic stuff on my guitar, I've decided I want to get back into electronic... But a lot has changed too!
Current set up...
I've picked myself up a Macbook Pro 8GB and been looking at Ableton and Logic. I've still got my Yamaha DJXII somehow, as well as my monitors, and a nice condenser mic which I'd been using with my guitar and live percussion through Audacity.
So the time has come to get some real advice about midi keys and setting up for recording....
I've been looking at the Akai APC 25 USB as it seems to have a great set-up for hot keys and doing some live performances with my pre-recorded sounds. Has anyone had experience with this? Are there any better recommended tools?
Bearing in mind my budget is relatively slim (c.£100 for a midi controller) ....
Are all tools like Ableton/Logic/Reason etc. just about personal preference, or are there benefits to each? And if so what are the benefits?
Again I know trying it out is the best way, but also I don't want to be picking up equipment, or laying down tracks in sample versions of software, just to end up not liking it and sounds going to waste, or having to go through returns and this whole process again...
Literally any advice is good advice - so please share the knowledge!
