We are a family of 5 who want to begin our musical journey together. 3 kids age 5,5,7. Our 7 year old girl very interested in piano and has been to a local music and art camp a few times. She is playing a few bars of various songs by ear on a new Christmas keyboard. Our 5 year old girl expressed interest in violin and we bought a half violin for Christmas. The 5 year old boy interested in Ukulele or guitar perhaps. Mom is interested in Banjo or Dulcimer. Dad is a wheelchair user with limited dexterity interested in Dobro or Harmonica.
I am reaching out to teachers via Lessons.com for all the aforementioned instruments to investigate if family music lessons is a viable concept. We could all start on ukulele or other instrument if that facilitates teaching, or we perhaps find a way to do a family lesson but offshoot based on specific instruments of course.
Is this a workable idea? I searched for family music lessons but found mostly programs for 0-3. We'd like to try to share this as well as reap the benefits of traveling to and from together instead of driving hither and yon multiple nights a week. Would it be better to contact local music schools, look for an in home teacher to come to us? Obviously group lessons only go so far and specific 1-1 time and training will be needed to advance but there must be some valuable variation of my plan.
We are in the Raleigh, NC area if someone has specific suggestions, but I'm mostly looking for feedback on the idea.
