Hei everyone! I’m looking for a new instrument to learn with a bit of an unusual criteria of what I’m looking for. I realise that something that matches all of these might be a pipe dream, but I’m asking here just in case there’s something out there that might be the perfect fit for me.
Currently I’m learning double bass (seriously) and planning on picking up the harmonica as well (for fun). The main problem with these instruments is that they’re pretty loud and I live with flatmates that complain if I practice for more than 30 mins at a time. I’d love to have something I could spend a few hours fiddling around with in my room without disturbing them.
I’d also love if this instrument is something easily portable, preferably something I can stick in my backpack or strap down to my double bass case (I already have trouble moving that from place to place and I don’t think I can manage with another bulky instrument!). I was considering learning the mandolin for that reason, before I realise how much of an issue noise is.
I’m also looking for a really expressive instrument. I love the double bass, but I feel like it doesn’t really let me express or explore my feelings or ideas I may have as well as something like, for example, piano or guitar. And I’d love to play something melodic to contrast with my bass.
Finally, I’m hoping to not spend too much money on getting into it. I was thinking of spending £50-250 on this, although with some saving up I can justify spending up to £500. I would especially like to spend less if it’s an instrument not easily portable by plane, as I travel between two countries quite often and if I can’t take it with me then I have to buy one for each location.
Like I mentioned, I know that an instrument that matches all of these criteria is probably a pipe dream, but if anyone thinks there’s something that would be a good fit for me then I’d love to hear about it! Any suggestions will be very much appreciated!!
TL;DR: Does anyone know of any instrument which is quiet, expressive, portable, and relatively inexpensive? Or one that at least matches some of these criteria? Any suggestions would be appreciated!!
PS: I know I can learn to make music on my computer, my problem with that is how deliberate (for the lack of a better world) programming synths and stuff is. I have Guitar Pro and I love writing scores in it, but I’d love something I can just sit down and noodle around with.
