So, I'm 23, just graduated college, and my parents bought me an acoustic guitar for Christmas! I want to learn but don't know where to begin. (A little background: I played bass guitar in 9th and 10th grade, but haven't picked it up since. So I can sorta read music, but it's been a long time - I understand a lot of people use guitar tabs anyway - and I can sorta keep a rhythm)
My goal is to be a casual player for my own enjoyment and my friends. I would like to play at campfires, entertain friends if they ask, and just jam. I'm not really interested in playing in a band or anything, though who knows (if I become good enough).
I have a few specific questions but please feel free to offer any advice you may have. Thanks!!! :)
- As part of the present, my parents offered to pay for a month of private lessons. So I'm going to start looking at different places. I see Guitar Center has lessons... does anyone have experience with them? Or should I look for a private teacher?
- I was also thinking about buying a 'music theory' book from Barnes & Noble. Does anyone have any recommendations? Is this necessary?
- There are a lot of people on youtube advocating for their training program. I'm skeptical that they will be a waste of time. What do you all think?
