So, I'm an aspiring EDM (electronic dance music) producer myself and the main genre I produce is Future Bass. For those who don't know what Future Bass is, it's basically a more melodic version of modern trap and hip-hop music. For me, it has a very distinct sound that I cannot miss and I know immediately when what I'm listening to is Future Bass, but for some people, this isn't the case and with the producer known as Illenium, everyone seems to think he makes Future Bass. A lot of people in the EDM producing community even make YouTube tutorials titled 'how to make Future Bass like Illenium' or something like that. Out of all of the music I've ever listened to in my life, I'm pretty sure Illenium doesn't make Future Bass. Of course, I have nothing against his music. I think it's totally cool and I like it. To me, he makes Melodic Dubstep. Yeah sure most of his music doesn't include Dubstep Basses or anything, but just remember; Melodic Dubstep isn't focused on basses and growls. What makes a genre a genre to me is the tempo, the rhythm of the drums, and the style or feel of the sound. Future Bass is meant to be lush and wobbly with a trap beat consisting of stuttering hi-hats, quick and punchy drums and it's usually at around 140-150 bpm. Sometimes it's slower or maybe even faster. Melodic Dubstep is exactly what Illenium makes. Lots of loud drums, loud chord stacks, and goes with a Dubstep type beat. Sure, maybe some of his music is sort of inspired by Future Bass, but for the most part, it should be classified as Melodic Dubstep.
Now, I'm sure a lot of you guys may not totally understand why this is a big deal to me, but as an aspiring producer who is trying to make a break in the music industry, I would rather not have the main genre of music that I produce turned into something that it's not.
