I am finally enjoying a really decent, balanced studio monitor setup (Adam T7Vs + a Sub8). Levels set via an SPL meter, etc. It makes listening to professional tracks much more enjoyable, mostly...
Is it just me, or is there a lot of poorly mastered crap out there even for big name artists?
For example, if I listen to popular EDM producers (such as Deadmau5, van Buuren, etc.) their tracks are well balanced across the spectrum. But if I try to listen to certain pop music with the same setup, the low end is ridiculously over-emphasized (one Lana Del Ray track I remember was particularly bad). I mean way overdone. And just to make sure I wasn't getting weird coupling effects, I pulled up a spectrum analyzer while listening, and my eyes confirmed what my ears (or in this case, my skin) was experiencing.
Is this just bad mixing, or is there some other methodology behind it?
