This month's genre was created by FGC9 runner-up /u/Got2ReturnVideoTapes because the winner can't be contacted. The winner was /u/aghost_101 (GHOST on SoundCloud).
This month's dreamed-up genre: Progressive Electro-Noir
Description
The Feel: Makes the listener feel unsettled but also want to dance. Like an ear drug you’re taking for the first time that seems like it’s going to be a bad trip but ends up being an incredible ride.
Structure and Characteristics: It features a gradually spiralling progression of chords and arpeggios that get thicker and darker in texture as the song goes on, until an eventual climax is reached and a hypnotic raw lead is introduced, which is played by a core synth sound (sawtooth, square or triangle) which can have any number of effects on it, as long as evidence of the saw/square/triangle sound is maintained. Don’t be afraid of chord/lead repetition, however make sure the texture is changing in any way; filter cutoffs, delays, reverbs, chorus etc.
Tempo: 120-150. Instrumentation: Synths and samples necessary. Vocals can be incorporated but never the lead/dominant. Drum samples comprised from drum machines, almost robotic but also ever growing. The introduction of the saw/square/triangle sound is CRUCIAL after the gradual build up to it.
