So to cut to the chase, I have a fairly good understanding of electronic music. I use Izotopes new Neutron to mix everything down and at the end of the day I am fairly satisfied with my mixes. Depending on what I play the song on, however, there is a clear difference between my unmastered track and someones mastered track.
Now I've tried to self master my own tracks, by basically compressing with minimal distortion. As for the compressor I've tried just using FL stock compressor, neutron, and camel crushers subtle master preset. However, I am assuming because I mixed everything down to 0db (which is the default level for the mixer, right?), any additional compressor on the master just distorts the hell out of my song and my side chaining becomes all fucked up for some reason.
I've used Landr to master and all it sounds like is just compression and/or saturation. But I would rather not have to pay them any more money if I can just do the same thing in my own DAW. Using Landr also doesnt seem to distort the song too bad either.
After thinking and some research, I want to bounce all the stuff from my song into a new file and just try mastering my song using my own stems instead of trying to fuck with all the effects on the original, but how can I keep all the side chaining I kept from the original mixdown?
I feel like my options are to EQ and carefully compress the fuck out of the original song on the original file, or bounce out all of the audio and try to re-mix then master the song on a new file.
Lastly, I am completely self taught so if something I said doesn't make sense or is incorrect please correct me. I know there is no certain or secret way to master but there must be a simple way to make everything in the mix pop with minimal plugins and preferably stock plugins
