I download free packs, use torrents and services like splice all the time. The main problem I have with it is you have to search through all these sub directories and folders to find the sound you want, when you might not even be sure you know what your looking for in the first place!
I have looked around for a utility program that could easily organize a sample library on either Mac or PC but all of them are outdated, don't do what I want them to and suck. So it got me thinking, why don't I create my own?
My concept for the program would be to index a main folder directory (like your sample library) and tag files with pre-defined keywords, file types, or even exclude words. Then, move all files and one shots with those attributes to a pre-named folder.
For example:
Input Folder: "User Library"
Keywords: "Kick"
Exceptions: "808"
File format: "Any"
Additional Options - Normalize? "On" One Shots only? "On" Sync folder settings? "ON" Delete Empty Folders? "On"
Output Folder Directory: "User Library"
Output Folder name: "Kicks"
Then it'd take every "kick" sample from all your packs, normalize the sample, and consolidate all files into one folder while avoiding any 808's (in case I wanted a seperate "808" folder as well).
I think this would work great for most modern daws, where built-in file browsers work great when you have all files in one location. In ableton, you can just press the down arrow and preview the sample alongside your music and you wouldn't have to click a bunch of extra folders or sift through a bunch of packs or names.
My main question is: if I dedicated a bunch of time coding this, would any of you guys use it? I was thinking of making it either a very inexpensive price or free with optional donations.
