I'm confused. I used to compress sounds with a lot of dynamic changes using an instant attack time and the longest release time thinking that anything over the signal was being compressed and that it would flatten the sound out completely, but i've realised when using a long release time say 3 seconds no compression is actually happening it just results in the volume being turned down. So is release time actually how quickly the compression reacts to the gain changes in the signal ? if that's right then with a vocal with a lot of dynamic changes a quicker release time would react to the gain changes faster meaning more compression is actually happening ?
