Hi all, I'm somewhat new to producing (busy college student that started over the summer) and I've reached a bit of a rough patch (lol patch) in my journey.
I've spent most of my time up to this point doing a lot of learning about some of the most basic aspects of production and just sketching out really poor ideas, really only fleshing out two of those sketches into tracks thus far. It started out really slow, then seemed to ramp a lot, and now I feel like I'm at a bit of a wall. Lately, whenever I've sat down to make something, I've been completely lost as to even what kind of music I'd like to create. If I stop thinking and just let myself work, I find myself making music that all sounds the same. It wouldn't be a problem if I didn't really at all like what I was making.
I think the two things that are really causing the blockage are: 1) lack of music theory knowledge 2) overwhelming amounts of options for sounds My only equipment is my laptop and some software synths. I'm going to start working on more music theory. I've considered getting a hardware synth to almost limit myself to some basic sounds. Any suggestions to what I should do to help me? Should I take a break from production to focus on learning piano? Should I invest in some physical equipment?
Many thanks, and a happy new year my friends.
