I'm a beginner learning music theory. When it comes to time signatures, most introductions talk about strong beats (stressed beats) and weak beats (unstressed beats). I understand what they mean by that when counting the rhythm out loud. Unfortunately, they never go on to describe how that translates to writing or playing real music and I'm a bit lost...
-
Would a composer have that in mind when writing a melody? In what ways would he emphasize the first and third beat when writing a song in four-four time? Higher volume, higher pitch, longer notes, notes instead of pauses?
-
Would a musician playing a tune made of four equal quarter notes per measure automatically try to somehow emphasize the first and the third one?
-
And how does that work when writing music for a band? Would it be enough to e.g. have a drumbeat on the strong beats or would the part of every musician try to emphasize it simultaneously?
