Sorry, this post is kind of geared towards making ambient, pad-filled rap beats (see: NAV) but it would easily carry over in to any EDM work I would try to do, plus, there aren't any very active hiphop/rap production subreddits.
I find myself sitting in FL with a loop that I've created that I really like, but obviously that one loop isn't going to cut it for a whole song. So I let it play through and add notes/chords to what I have as it goes and it usually turns out 1 of 2 ways: it sounds robotic, like you can tell I was just trying to add stuff to add stuff, OR the variations really just sound out of place even if they're in the same key. I try to stay at a similar pace, and not throw in wild pitch changes but it still sounds like garbage.
After a couple hours of working on that 1 pattern, I give up and just throw it in the track and forget about it. Doesn't mean I actually like the result, just tired of dealing with it. So then then track sounds mediocre, and that's why I'm stuck with minimal plays and 0 sales (aside from what I think was a pity purchase from a friend) after a few years of producing now. It's hard not to just trash producing in general when I make such little progress. I don't even know if I'm asking for advice or just trying to vent for the night, sorry.
