Here are just some examples of older dance songs that made this question come to mind: Basshunter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3CxhBIrBho David Guetta: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUVCQXMUVnI Edward Maya & Vika Jigulina: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-Z3YrHJ1sU
These tracks and other tracks in general around that time period seem to lack one or many of the following things in the mix/master: high end, saturation, layering of sounds, stereo width, clean low end, proper sample selection, and many more things that I can't think of at the top my head. If you listen to todays standard of KSHMR & Deadmau5 tracks for example, the difference in quality is unbelievable!
These are the reasons I can come up with for this difference in quality standards:
Plugins: New plugins are constantly being developed of course. Possibly new techniques for mixing such as using Trackspacer to attentuate conflicting frequencies in real time to result in a very clean sound makes todays music better (although I don't think too many producers know about this yet so I doubt that's a reason). Then you might say that the newest synthesizers are a reason for the quality difference (Serum). That's probably part of it but, then again you have synths like Sylenth1 that have been around since 2006 (I believe) and were surely used in that older music as well (so it can't just be the synths!). I also see many engineers using the same old plugins that came out years ago.
More Knowledge: Maybe the world has exchanged all they’re best mixing techniques with eachother lol? Like, “oh yea, I sidechain my reverb to my leads to make for a cleaner sound”. Or, “I always tune my drums to the key of my track” or, “I cut the lows on all tracks that don’t need it to make room for just the bass & kick” or, “I add an extra layer of white noise on my supersaws to make it sound bigger”.
I really don’t know guys haha. I think this is really interesting though. What do you think the reason(s) are?
Thanks
