Over the summer, I listened to a lot of Four Tet and Burial, which in turn influenced my production as I began incorporating samples into my work. I stopped using samples as much recently, but have found myself wanting to incorporate them again.
My question is, how do you guys sample? I use Ableton, primarily in Arrangement mode, and tend to just drop the sample into an audio track and cut out random bits and pieces. It's worked for me in the past, but I'm wondering if you guys have come up with better ways to sample. Do you guys listen to the whole track first, dive in randomly, or what?
Also on the sampling note - how do people like Four Tet make their samples mesh? I can't imagine that all of them are in the same/correct key. I know people like Flying Lotus can't even read sheet music, and I find it hard to believe that every great producer just has an automatic ear for figuring out the keys.
