So I've got this dubstep song I'm working on right now. It actually has a trancy kind of vibe, but I've got a real heavy sub bass and a waveable-churning dubstep bass. They're both side chained to ghost quarter notes on a synth.
When i first started, I'd just use my ears. "This bass is too low sounding for that sub". Nope.
Then I discovered Auto Filter. So I low passed my sub at 100, and high passed my dubstep bass at like 150. This should clear up all my problems!
And it did. I thought. I had become content with listening to mud. Cue EQ.
I put an EQ three on the dubstep bass and set the low freq to 250. Then I made a 5Db cut to the lows. Basically (as far as I understand), this lowers the gain for the lowest frequencies in my dubstep bass (below 250) and leaves the rest untouched.
After I did this, it was like night and day. The bottom end breathes so well.
I've heard too, and this I found to be important, to never EQ with a track on solo. It's true. EQ is all about balancing frequencies with other sounds. I like to do my filtering on solo, and EQ with the whole groove going.
Hope this helps someone!
