Lately I have been struggling with the notion of whether or not the ability to play an instrument even remotely matters if you were pursuing a career in the electronic world as a DJ/Producer/Performer. I myself have played the guitar for 7 years, the piano for 2, and I have placed a heavy emphasis on learning music theory as a fundamental part of any musicians success in the music industry. However, I find this not to be the case for many of my fellow music writing colleagues have found much success without even having a major or minor scale under their belt. I have a friend who has recently reached 6,000 followers on Soundcloud producing Lo-fi hip hop. He is a friend and I genuinely congratulate his success but internally I struggle with the fact that he has 0 music experience and yet manages to succeed. I guess you could say that I am confused as to how this is possible for a musician for create music without understanding how to properly make music in the first place. To me it is like doing mathematics without understanding algebra but alas, he is getting the right answers.. Anyways I was wondering if anyone on Reddit had any insight as to if these DJ/Producers that we see performing on stage have legitimate music experience learning the fundamentals of music theory or if it's true that I can just plug in my push pad, load up E Minor, press all the keys in any order that sound good, and pass it off like I know what I'm doing.
