Hi everyone,
I've been plugging away at music production for a little over a year now and, while I've got the basics down, one thing I'm having trouble with is making my tracks not sound so repetitive and stilted. My current process involves creating a rhythm track either by looping a break, or drawing a pattern out in Ableton using my Push 1. After that I'll tack on a keyboard and/or bass melody, and maybe a second melody for the chorus.
The problem is that instead of sounding like a nuanced composition that slowly morphs and grows over the course of its run time, it sounds extremely "loopy". You can practically see me launching each scene, with very clearly delineated sections that make the listener go "oh, he looped that rhythm and melody for 2 minutes, and now he's looping the second one. Huh". It's boring.
Obviously there's lots of ways around this, but I'm a little overwhelmed concerning where I should start. I've also thought about buying an Elektron Machinedrum, in the hopes that it will have a more hands on and jammy workflow, but in my experience these sorts of issues have less to do with gear, and more to do with a user's approach to the creative process. Any thoughts or good tutorials would be extremely appreciated. Thanks.
