One of the (many) discouraging things about music production, I've found, is when you're swapping back and forth between your track and the song you're using as a reference and, amongst other things, you are faced with the fact that the reference track is significantly louder AND doesn't redline on the master.
I've read that, while you're mixing your track, you should have between 6 and 4db of headroom before you bounce it out for mastering.
My question is this: After you have the track mastered, will it become as loud or similar in loudness to the reference?
Basically... should you always expect your track to be significantly quieter until you get the finished product?
Or do I just have way too many overlapping frequencies to begin with?
Thanks
