I'm looking for advice on a few things, mostly to do with the dirtier and darker side of D&B and halftime:
Drums: most people seem to do so much eq work on layered kicks and snares. Is this really that necessary? I always seemed to find it muddied up the sound and could never get the exact effect I was looking for, but some people swear by it. Any tips for hard hitting weird snares and hollow booming kicks?
Synths: I could never get these to sit how I wanted in the mix. I can get a sound close to what I want, but it always seems to sound flat or just doesn't sit right. Also, any tips on making flutter sounds?
Intros: how do you do it? Mine always sounded so generic and flaky. I love the epic intro styles that Noisia, Annix et al seem to make effortlessly. Any tips on workflow here?
And finally vocals: I really tend to overuse both samples and acapellas as hooks, and would really love some tips on effective hooks without sample abuse.
For reference I use Ableton with Serum, Tone2 Gladiator, Massive and a whole host of effects that I've picked up along the way.
Thanks so much for any help guys, I've missed production so sorely whilst starting a family and I want to come back better than before!
