I'm trying to make deep house, but not sure where to start with the chords. Some places on the internet say to just sample one chord, especially a complex one, and then pitch shift it up and down. (Meaning that the chords won't fit into a specific key.) For example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAtk4ICyOVU
Does this mean that only the root of that chord should fit into a key? Or the whole chord? Or does it not matter in deep house? Thanks.
P.S. http://promusicproducers.com/6-deep-house-chord-progression-tips-for-beginners/ The first example says that the song is in C minor, but then uses chords that have notes like C# and F#, neither of which are in C minor.
