Recently discovered the artist Robotaki and his song Ghostboy.
Really loved funky jazzy vibe so I bought the flac from 7digital.co.uk, but found surprisingly it didn't really sound better than the youtube rip. Most of the time the youtube rips are always significantly inferior to flac versions so i found that bizarre.
Anyway I was quite surprised to find that on importing into ableton the flac seemed to be compressed and slammed to hell, pic below:

And running it through Studio Ones 3'd Dynamic range detector showed it had a dynamic range of 4. The youtube rip actually had a larger dynamic range of 6, confirming that the flac has actually been compressed more than the youtube rip. I had to double check twice to make sure I had not mixed up the two files, but I did not. The flac actually goes up to 22khz while the mp3 rip has the typical cut of at about 16khz.
I really enjoy songs with a bit of dynamic range and absolutely hate overly compressed songs so this was a bit of a disappointment. This is the first time I've ever seen a youtube rip being less compressed and sounding better than the flac.
Whats up with this? Is this normal?
