What's up fam? I'm a little lost on what I'm going to need to start performing sets at local venues this year. I want to finish up a short (maybe 3 track) EP over the next couple of months while practicing live mixing and then see if I can try to start getting gigs around the city towards the end of spring / early summer (I live about 40 mins outside of NYC).
I have a couple of questions:
First, newer producers/DJs presumably don't have enough original content for a full ~40 min - hour long set of just their own tracks typically, right? Do most people just do sets with their own songs sprinkled in between current popular tracks?
Second, what do I need as far as a mixer/deck? All I know is that Pioneer, Denon and Numark are the names that I immediately think of without really knowing anything about that hardware. I have zero experience whatsoever DJing or live mixing but a great sense of rhythm and (what I think is) a good base sense of where/how/when to mix, fade and splice songs. What kind of hardware and software do I need if I already have a MBP and audio interface? I'm pretty comfortable with triggering samples rhythmically on the fly so something with pads that I could incorporate some live variation would be dope. I've heard Ableton can be a good live performance solution but I use Logic Pro and Maschine so a cheaper alternative would be greatly appreciated (unless it really is the best route to take). Is a controller and a Macbook all I really need?
Do I need to invest in any kind of speaker system or only if I'm planning on playing more private events where speakers won't be on-site? I use HS7's for monitors but I'm assuming those aren't really suitable for live shows as they're generally flat and suited for mixing obviously.
If I think of anything else I'll comment below or edit this post but this is the stuff I would appreciate direction on the most. Thank you!
